Louis Braille – The Man Who Gave Light to the Blind

Long ago, in France, there lived a little boy named Louis Braille. He was only three years old. One day, he was playing outside his house while his father, who was a blacksmith, was working nearby. Louis started playing with some tools. Suddenly, a sharp tool injured his eye. He cried in great pain.

After a few days, he lost sight in one eye. Soon, his other eye also became infected, and he became completely blind.

In 1819, when Louis was ten years old, he got admission to the Royal Institute for Blind Children in Paris. There, he learned to read by touching letters made from wood, cloth, and pins.

At that time, a French army officer named Captain Charles Barbier invented a system called “Night Writing.” It used raised dots and lines so that soldiers could read messages in the dark using their fingers. However, it was too difficult to use and was not successful.

Louis became very interested in this system. As he grew older, he worked hard and improved it. He made it simpler and easier to read. This new system became known as the Braille alphabet.

In this way, a blind boy helped the world to see. Braille is a method of reading by touch. Each letter of the English alphabet has a special pattern of raised dots.

However, Braille needs more space because the dots cannot be placed too close together. That is why Braille books are thicker than normal printed books.

लुई को इस विधि में बहुत रुचि हुई। जैसे-जैसे वह बड़ा हुआ, उसने इस पर मेहनत की और इसे आसान बना दिया। उसने एक नई और सरल प्रणाली बनाई, जिसे ब्रेल लिपि कहा गया।
