What is an Imperative Sentence?

English:

An imperative sentence is a sentence that gives an order, request, advice, instruction, warning, or suggestion.

The subject “you” is usually hidden (understood).

Hindi:

Imperative sentence वह वाक्य होता है जिससे आदेश, विनती, सलाह, निर्देश, चेतावनी या सुझाव दिया जाता है।

इसमें कर्ता “तुम / आप” प्रायः छिपा होता है।

Type-1 Imperative Sentence (Command / Order)

Imperative sentences start with the base form of the verb. They are used to give commands or orders. The subject “you” is understood but not written.

Type-1 imperative sentence में वाक्य verb की base form से शुरू होता है। इनका प्रयोग आदेश या हुक्म देने के लिए किया जाता है। इनमें कर्ता “तुम / आप” छिपा होता है।

1. Open the door.
   दरवाज़ा खोलो।

2. Close the window.
   खिड़की बंद करो।

3. Sit down.
   बैठ जाओ।

4. Stand up.
   खड़े हो जाओ।

5. Read this book.
   यह किताब पढ़ो।

Important Notes:

1. Verb हमेशा base form में होती है
   (open, close, read, write — opens / opened नहीं)

2. Sentence का subject लिखा नहीं जाता

3. Tone strong होती है, इसलिए इसे command/order माना जाता है

Type-2 Imperative Sentences (Sentences starting with Please / Kindly)

When an imperative sentence starts with “please” or “kindly”, it shows a polite request or suggestion, not a command. The subject “you” is hidden.

जब imperative sentence की शुरुआत “please” या “kindly” से होती है, तब वह विनती या सुझाव को दर्शाता है, आदेश को नहीं। इसमें कर्ता “आप / तुम” छिपा रहता है।

1. Please open the door.
   कृपया दरवाज़ा खोलो।

2. Kindly help me.
   कृपया मेरी मदद करो।

3. Please sit down.
   कृपया बैठ जाइए।

4. Kindly listen to me carefully.

Type 3: Negative Imperative Sentences

When an imperative sentence starts with “Don’t”, it is used to stop someone from doing something. It shows prohibition, warning, or negative advice.

Structure:
Don’t + verb (1st form)

ऐसे वाक्य जिनमें “Don’t” आता है, वे नकारात्मक आज्ञार्थक वाक्य होते हैं। इनका हिन्दी अर्थ “मत + क्रिया” होता है।

Type 4: Imperative Sentences starting with LET

When an imperative sentence starts with let, it is used to suggest, propose, or allow someone to do something.

Structure:
Let + object + base form of verb

जब वाक्य Let से शुरू होता है, तो वह किसी को कुछ करने देना / करने का सुझाव देना दिखाता है। हिंदी में इसका अर्थ होता है:
“करने दो / करने दें”

   मुझे जाने दो।

   उसे बोलने दो।

Type 5 Imperative Sentence “Don’t let …” (रोकने / न होने देने का भाव)

Imperative sentences starting with “Don’t let + object + base verb” are used to stop something from happening or prevent someone from doing something.

“Don’t let …” से शुरू होने वाले आज्ञार्थक वाक्य किसी काम को होने से रोकने या किसी व्यक्ति को कुछ करने न देने के लिए प्रयोग होते हैं।

हिंदी में इनका भाव होता है:
“मत होने दो”, “मत करने दो”, “ऐसा न होने देना”

Sentences that start with “Let’s” (Let us) are used to suggest, invite, or propose doing something together. Here the hidden subject is “we”, not “you”

“Let’s” से शुरू होने वाले वाक्य किसी काम को मिलकर करने का सुझाव या आमंत्रण देते हैं। इन वाक्यों का हिंदी अर्थ अक्सर “आओ / चलो” से शुरू होता है। इनमें कर्ता “हम” छिपा होता है।
