What is Past Perfect Continuous Tense?

The Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used to show that an action started in the past, continued for some time, and was still going on up to another point in the past.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense का प्रयोग यह बताने के लिए किया जाता है कि कोई कार्य भूतकाल में शुरू हुआ, कुछ समय तक चलता रहा, और भूतकाल के ही किसी दूसरे समय तक जारी था।

Auxiliary Verbs (Helping Verbs):

Had + Been is the auxiliary verb used in this tense.

Verb form used:

Main verb + ing (Present Participle)

Sentence Structure / Syntax

1. Affirmative (Positive Sentences)

Structure:
Subject + had + been + verb-ing + object + time

2. Negative Sentences

Structure:
Subject + had + not + been + verb-ing + object + time

3. Interrogative

Structure:
Wh + Had + subject + been + verb-ing + object + time?

4. Negative Interrogative

Structure:
Wh + Had + subject + not + been + verb-ing + object + time?

1. वह दो घंटे से पढ़ रहा था।

B. Past Perfect Continuous - Negative Hindi Sentences

Auxiliary Verb (सहायक क्रिया)

had been

1. Affirmative (सकारात्मक)

2. Negative (नकारात्मक)

Subject + had not been + verb(ing) + since/for + time

3. Interrogative (प्रश्नवाचक)

Wh + Had + subject + been + verb(ing) + since/for + time?

4. Negative Interrogative (नकारात्मक प्रश्न)

Wh + Had + subject + not been + verb(ing) + since/for + time?

Use of SINCE

Since is used to show the starting point of an action in the past.

Examples:

1. He had been studying since morning.

2. She had been living here since 2015.

3. They had been waiting since 10 o’clock.

4. I had been teaching English since last year.

Use of FOR

For is used to show the duration of time (period of time) of an action in the past.

Examples:

1. He had been studying for two hours.

2. She had been living here for five years.

3. They had been waiting for a long time.

4. I had been teaching English for three years.

Note: There is a simple trick that if a time can be counted like 2 years, 2 months, 2 weeks, 2 minutes, 2 seconds etc. then you can consider that "for " will be used else "since".

A. Affirmative 

1. She had been studying for two hours.
   वह दो घंटे से पढ़ाई कर रही थी।

2. They had been playing in the ground since morning.
   वे सुबह से मैदान में खेल रहे थे।

3. He had been working in this company for five years.
   वह पाँच वर्षों से इस कंपनी में काम कर रहा था।

4. I had been waiting for you since 10 a.m.
   मैं सुबह 10 बजे से तुम्हारा इंतज़ार कर रहा था।

5. The children had been watching TV for a long time.
   बच्चे काफी समय से टीवी देख रहे थे।

B. Negative – 5 Sentences

1. She had not been studying for two hours.
   वह दो घंटे से पढ़ाई नहीं कर रही थी।

2. They had not been playing since morning.
   वे सुबह से नहीं खेल रहे थे।

3. He had not been working there for long.
   वह वहाँ लंबे समय से काम नहीं कर रहा था।

4. I had not been waiting for him since evening.
   मैं शाम से उसका इंतज़ार नहीं कर रहा था।

5. The students had not been preparing for the exam properly.
   छात्र परीक्षा की सही तैयारी नहीं कर रहे थे।

C. Interrogative

1. Had she been studying for two hours?
   क्या वह दो घंटे से पढ़ाई कर रही थी?

2. Had they been playing since morning?
   क्या वे सुबह से खेल रहे थे?

3. Had he been working there for five years?
   क्या वह पाँच वर्षों से वहाँ काम कर रहा था?

4. Had you been waiting for me for a long time?
   क्या तुम काफी समय से मेरा इंतज़ार कर रहे थे?

5. Had the children been sleeping since afternoon?
   क्या बच्चे दोपहर से सो रहे थे?

D. Negative Interrogative

1. Had she not been studying for two hours?
   क्या वह दो घंटे से पढ़ाई नहीं कर रही थी?

2. Had they not been playing since morning?
   क्या वे सुबह से नहीं खेल रहे थे?

3. Had he not been working here for many years?
   क्या वह कई वर्षों से यहाँ काम नहीं कर रहा था?

4. Had you not been waiting for me since evening?
   क्या तुम शाम से मेरा इंतज़ार नहीं कर रहे थे?

5. Had the teacher not been teaching the same lesson for days?
   क्या अध्यापक कई दिनों से वही पाठ नहीं पढ़ा रहे थे?

WH-Question Sentences

1. How long had she been studying?
   वह कितने समय से पढ़ाई कर रही थी?

2. Since when had they been living in Delhi?
   वे दिल्ली में कब से रह रहे थे?

3. Why had he been working so hard?
   वह इतनी मेहनत क्यों कर रहा था?

4. What had you been doing since morning?
   तुम सुबह से क्या कर रहे थे?

5. Where had she been working before joining this school?
   इस स्कूल में आने से पहले वह कहाँ काम कर रही थी?

If a Hindi sentence starts with: “से + रहा था / रही थी / रहे थे” its mean it is a Past Perfect Continuous Tense. Here से talks about time.

1. Action that was happening continuously before another past action

Use: To show that something started before a past event and continued up to that event.

उपयोग: यह दिखाने के लिए कि कोई क्रिया किसी भूतपूर्व घटना से पहले शुरू हुई थी और उस घटना तक लगातार चलती रही।

Examples:

1. I had been studying for two hours before he arrived.
   वह आने से पहले मैं दो घंटे से पढ़ रहा था।

2. She had been cooking when I reached her house.
   जब मैं उसके घर पहुँचा, वह खाना बना रही थी।

3. They had been playing football before it started raining.
   बारिश शुरू होने से पहले वे फुटबॉल खेल रहे थे।

4. He had been reading the book before the teacher asked him a question.
   शिक्षक ने उससे सवाल पूछने से पहले वह किताब पढ़ रहा था।

5. We had been waiting for the bus before it finally came.
   बस आखिरकार आने से पहले हम इंतजार कर रहे थे।

2. Action that explains the cause of a past situation

Use: To explain why something happened in the past.

उपयोग: किसी घटना के पीछे कारण बताने के लिए कि वह अतीत में क्यों हुई।

Examples:

1. I was tired because I had been working all day.
   मैं थका हुआ था क्योंकि मैं पूरे दिन काम कर रहा था।

2. She was happy because she had been practicing for the competition.
   वह खुश थी क्योंकि वह प्रतियोगिता के लिए अभ्यास कर रही थी।

3. The floor was wet because it had been raining.
   फर्श गिला था क्योंकि बारिश हो रही थी।

4. He was upset because he had been waiting for hours.
   वह परेशान था क्योंकि वह घंटों से इंतजार कर रहा था।

5. They were exhausted because they had been running in the park.
   वे थके हुए थे क्योंकि वे पार्क में दौड़ रहे थे।

3. To show repeated actions in the past before another past action

Use: To show actions that happened repeatedly over a period before another past event.

उपयोग: किसी पिछले समय में किसी अन्य घटना से पहले एक अवधि के दौरान बार-बार होने वाली क्रियाओं को दर्शाने के लिए।

Examples:

1. She had been calling him several times before he finally answered.
   उसने कई बार उसे कॉल किया था, जब तक उसने आखिरकार फोन नहीं उठाया।

2. I had been asking questions all morning before the teacher got angry.

4. To describe duration of an action before a past point

Use: To emphasize how long an action had been happening before something in the past.

उपयोग: किसी कार्य के होने की अवधि को इस बात पर जोर देने के लिए कि वह किसी अतीत की घटना से पहले कितनी देर तक हो रहा था।

Examples:

1. I had been studying for five hours before I took a break.
   मैं पाँच घंटे से पढ़ रहा था जब मैंने ब्रेक लिया।

   वह एक घंटे से इंतजार कर रही थी जब ट्रेन आई।

3. They had been traveling for three days before they reached the city.

4. He had been working in that company for ten years before he resigned.
   वह दस साल से उस कंपनी में काम कर रहा था जब उसने इस्तीफा दिया।

5. We had been planning the trip for months before it finally happened.
   हमने महीनों से यात्रा की योजना बना रहे थे जब वह आखिरकार हुई।
