What is a Modal Verb?
A modal verb is a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used with the main verb to express ability, possibility, permission, necessity, advice, or obligation.
Modal verb (मोडल क्रिया) एक प्रकार की सहायक क्रिया होती है, जो मुख्य क्रिया के साथ मिलकर क्षमता, संभावना, अनुमति, आवश्यकता, सलाह या बाध्यता को दर्शाती है।
Modals for Ability (क्षमता बताने वाले Modal Verbs)
Ability means the power, skill, or capacity to do something. /Ability का अर्थ है किसी काम को करने की क्षमता या हुनर।
CAN – Showing Power, Skill, or Capacity
Used to talk about general ability in the present. / वर्तमान समय में किसी की सामान्य क्षमता बताने के लिए।
1. Power (शक्ति)
The machine can lift heavy loads.
यह मशीन भारी वजन उठा सकती है।
He can control his anger.
वह अपने गुस्से पर काबू पा सकता है।
2. Skill (कौशल / हुनर)
She can speak three languages.
वह तीन भाषाएँ बोल सकती है।
I can play the guitar.
मैं गिटार बजा सकता हूँ।
3. Capacity (क्षमता / योग्यता)
This room can accommodate fifty people.
यह कमरा पचास लोगों को समा सकता है।
The human brain can store a lot of information.
मानव मस्तिष्क बहुत सारी जानकारी संचित कर सकता है।
4. Mental Ability (मानसिक क्षमता)
He can understand complex ideas quickly.
वह जटिल विचार जल्दी समझ सकता है।
I can remember faces easily.
मैं चेहरों को आसानी से याद रख सकता हूँ।
5. Physical Ability (शारीरिक क्षमता)
She can run five kilometers without stopping.
वह बिना रुके पाँच किलोमीटर दौड़ सकती है।
I can lift this box alone.
मैं यह डिब्बा अकेले उठा सकता हूँ।
COULD – Showing Power, Skill, or Capacity (Past Ability)
Used to talk about general ability in the past. / भूतकाल में किसी की क्षमता बताने के लिए।
1. Power (शक्ति)
He could lift very heavy weights in his youth.
वह अपनी जवानी में बहुत भारी वजन उठा सकता था।
The engine could generate high power.
इंजन अधिक शक्ति पैदा कर सकता था।
2. Skill (कौशल / हुनर)
She could speak fluent English at the age of ten.
वह दस साल की उम्र में धाराप्रवाह अंग्रेज़ी बोल सकती थी।
I could draw beautiful sketches earlier.
मैं पहले सुंदर चित्र बना सकता था।
3. Capacity (क्षमता / योग्यता)
This hall could accommodate hundreds of people.
यह हॉल सैकड़ों लोगों को समा सकता था।
The old computer could store limited data.
पुराना कंप्यूटर सीमित डेटा संग्रह कर सकता था।
4. Mental Ability (मानसिक क्षमता)
He could understand difficult concepts easily.
वह कठिन अवधारणाएँ आसानी से समझ सकता था।
I could memorize long answers quickly.
मैं लंबे उत्तर जल्दी याद कर सकता था।
5. Physical Ability (शारीरिक क्षमता)
She could run ten kilometers without rest.
वह बिना आराम किए दस किलोमीटर दौड़ सकती थी।
I could work for long hours without feeling tired.
मैं बिना थके लंबे समय तक काम कर सकता था।
WAS ABLE TO / WERE ABLE TO – Showing Power, Skill, or Capacity
(Used for past, especially when the action was actually achieved)
1. Power (शक्ति)
He was able to lift the heavy stone alone.
वह अकेले भारी पत्थर उठाने में सक्षम था।
The engine was able to generate high power.
इंजन अधिक शक्ति उत्पन्न करने में सक्षम था।
2. Skill (कौशल / हुनर)
She was able to speak English fluently after practice.
अभ्यास के बाद वह धाराप्रवाह अंग्रेज़ी बोलने में सक्षम थी।
I was able to repair the computer myself.
मैं खुद कंप्यूटर ठीक करने में सक्षम था।
3. Capacity (क्षमता / योग्यता)
The hall was able to accommodate a large crowd.
हॉल बड़ी भीड़ को समायोजित करने में सक्षम था।
The bridge was able to carry heavy vehicles.
पुल भारी वाहनों को ढोने में सक्षम था।
4. Mental Ability (मानसिक क्षमता)
He was able to understand the problem quickly.
वह समस्या जल्दी समझने में सक्षम था।
I was able to memorize the entire speech.
मैं पूरा भाषण याद करने में सक्षम था।
5. Physical Ability (शारीरिक क्षमता)
She was able to complete the race despite injury.
चोट के बावजूद वह दौड़ पूरी करने में सक्षम थी।
They were able to climb the mountain safely.
वे सुरक्षित रूप से पहाड़ चढ़ने में सक्षम थे।
CAN – Informal Future Ability (भविष्य की अनौपचारिक क्षमता)
CAN is often used in spoken or informal English to show future power, skill, or capacity.
1. Power (शक्ति)
I can lift this machine tomorrow.
मैं कल इस मशीन को उठा सकता हूँ।
He can control the situation later.
वह बाद में स्थिति को संभाल सकता है।
2. Skill (कौशल / हुनर)
She can perform on stage next week.
वह अगले हफ्ते मंच पर प्रदर्शन कर सकती है।
I can teach you English after some practice.
मैं कुछ अभ्यास के बाद तुम्हें अंग्रेज़ी सिखा सकता हूँ।
3. Capacity (क्षमता / योग्यता)
This hall can hold 500 people tomorrow.
यह हॉल कल 500 लोगों को समा सकता है।
The system can handle more users next month.
यह सिस्टम अगले महीने और उपयोगकर्ताओं को संभाल सकता है।
4. Mental Ability (मानसिक क्षमता)
I can understand this chapter by evening.
मैं शाम तक यह अध्याय समझ सकता हूँ।
He can solve the problem after revision.
वह दोहराने के बाद समस्या हल कर सकता है।
5. Physical Ability (शारीरिक क्षमता)
She can run five kilometers after training.
प्रशिक्षण के बाद वह पाँच किलोमीटर दौड़ सकती है।
I can complete the work tomorrow.
मैं कल यह काम पूरा कर सकता हूँ।
WILL BE ABLE TO – Showing Future Power, Skill, or Capacity
1. Future Power (भविष्य की शक्ति)
The new machine will be able to lift heavier loads.
नई मशीन भारी वजन उठाने में सक्षम होगी।
He will be able to control the situation.
वह स्थिति को नियंत्रित करने में सक्षम होगा।
2. Future Skill (भविष्य का कौशल / हुनर)
She will be able to speak fluent English after practice.
अभ्यास के बाद वह धाराप्रवाह अंग्रेज़ी बोलने में सक्षम होगी।
I will be able to play the piano professionally one day.
एक दिन मैं पेशेवर रूप से पियानो बजाने में सक्षम हो जाऊँगा।
3. Future Capacity (भविष्य की क्षमता / योग्यता)
This hall will be able to accommodate 500 people.
यह हॉल 500 लोगों को समाहित करने में सक्षम होगा।
The system will be able to handle more data.
यह प्रणाली अधिक डेटा संभालने में सक्षम होगी।
4. Future Mental Ability (भविष्य की मानसिक क्षमता)
He will be able to understand complex concepts easily.
वह जटिल अवधारणाएँ आसानी से समझने में सक्षम होगा।
Students will be able to remember lessons better.
छात्र पाठों को बेहतर ढंग से याद रखने में सक्षम होंगे।
5. Future Physical Ability (भविष्य की शारीरिक क्षमता)
After recovery, she will be able to walk without support.
ठीक होने के बाद वह बिना सहारे चलने में सक्षम होगी।
I will be able to lift heavier weights after training.
प्रशिक्षण के बाद मैं अधिक वजन उठाने में सक्षम हो जाऊँगा।
COULD – Polite Ability (विनम्र रूप में शक्ति, कौशल या क्षमता)
Note: Could is used when we want to sound polite, soft, respectful, or formal.
1. Power (शक्ति) – Polite
I could lift this box for you, if you like.
अगर आप चाहें तो मैं आपके लिए यह डिब्बा उठा सकता हूँ।
He could handle the situation calmly.
वह स्थिति को शांति से संभाल सकता है।
2. Skill (कौशल / हुनर) – Polite
She could explain the topic very clearly.
वह विषय को बहुत स्पष्ट रूप से समझा सकती है।
I could design the website for you.
मैं आपके लिए वेबसाइट डिज़ाइन कर सकता हूँ।
3. Capacity (क्षमता / योग्यता) – Polite
This hall could accommodate a large audience.
यह हॉल बड़ी संख्या में लोगों को समा सकता है।
The system could process large data efficiently.
यह प्रणाली बड़े डेटा को कुशलता से प्रोसेस कर सकती है।
4. Mental Ability (मानसिक क्षमता) – Polite
I could understand your concern.
मैं आपकी चिंता समझ सकता हूँ।
He could solve this problem easily.
वह इस समस्या को आसानी से हल कर सकता है।
5. Physical Ability (शारीरिक क्षमता) – Polite
She could run the marathon with training.
प्रशिक्षण के साथ वह मैराथन दौड़ सकती है।
I could carry the bag for you.
