What is the use of a Subordinating Conjunction?

English:
A subordinating conjunction is used to connect a dependent clause with an independent clause and show a relationship such as time, reason, condition, contrast, purpose, result, place, or manner.

Hindi:
Subordinating conjunction का प्रयोग मुख्य वाक्य (main clause) और आश्रित वाक्य (dependent clause) को जोड़ने के लिए किया जाता है और यह समय, कारण, शर्त, विरोध, उद्देश्य, परिणाम, स्थान या तरीका बताता है।

1. TIME (समय बताने वाले Conjunctions)

after (के बाद)

Use: Something happens later.
Example:
I went home after the class ended.
मैं घर गया कक्षा खत्म होने के बाद।

before (से पहले)

Use: Something happens earlier.
Finish your work before you leave.
जाने से पहले अपना काम पूरा करो।

when (जब)

Use: At a particular time.
Call me when you arrive.
मुझे फोन करना जब तुम पहुँचो।

whenever (जब कभी)

Use: Every time something happens.
I feel happy whenever I see you.
मैं खुश होता हूँ जब भी तुम्हें देखता हूँ।

while (जब तक / उसी दौरान)

Use: Two actions happening together.
She was cooking while I was studying.
वह खाना बना रही थी जबकि मैं पढ़ रहा था।

as (जैसे ही / जब)

Use: Short time action or reason.
As I opened the door, it rained.
जैसे ही मैंने दरवाज़ा खोला, बारिश हुई।

as long as (जब तक)

Use: Duration with condition.
You can stay as long as you want.
तुम रह सकते हो जब तक चाहो।

as soon as (जैसे ही)

Use: Immediate action.
Call me as soon as you reach.
फोन करना जैसे ही तुम पहुँचो।

till / until (तक / जब तक)

Use: Up to a time.
Wait here until I return.
यहाँ रुको जब तक मैं लौटूँ।

since (तब से)

Use: Starting point of time.
I have lived here since 2010.
मैं यहाँ रह रहा हूँ 2010 से।

once (एक बार)

Use: After something happens.
Once you understand, it’s easy.
एक बार समझ लो, आसान है।

by the time (जब तक)

Use: Something finishes before another event.
By the time he arrived, we left.
जब तक वह आया, हम जा चुके थे।

2. CAUSE / REASON (कारण)

because (क्योंकि)

Use: Direct reason.
I stayed home because it was raining.
मैं घर पर रहा क्योंकि बारिश हो रही थी।

since / as (क्योंकि / चूँकि)

Use: Known or obvious reason.
Since you are tired, rest.
चूँकि तुम थके हो, आराम करो।

now that (अब जब)

Use: Present situation reason.
Now that he is rich, he helps others.
अब जब वह अमीर है, दूसरों की मदद करता है।

inasmuch as (इस कारण से)

Use: Formal reason.
He was punished inasmuch as he broke rules.
उसे सज़ा मिली क्योंकि उसने नियम तोड़े।

3. CONDITION (शर्त)

if (यदि)

Use: Possible condition.
You will pass if you study.
तुम पास हो जाओगे यदि पढ़ाई करोगे।

unless (यदि नहीं / जब तक नहीं)

Use: Negative condition.
You won’t succeed unless you try.
तुम सफल नहीं होगे जब तक कोशिश नहीं करोगे।

provided / provided that (बशर्ते)

Use: Strong condition.
You can go provided that you finish work.
तुम जा सकते हो बशर्ते काम पूरा करो।

on condition that (इस शर्त पर कि)

He will help you on condition that you obey.
वह मदद करेगा इस शर्त पर कि तुम मानो।

even if (भले ही)

Use: Impossible or difficult condition.
I will help you even if I’m busy.
मैं मदद करूँगा भले ही व्यस्त हूँ।

in case (अगर)

Take an umbrella in case it rains.
छाता ले लो अगर बारिश हो जाए।

whether (क्या)

I don’t know whether he will come.
मुझे नहीं पता क्या वह आएगा।

4. CONTRAST / CONCESSION (विरोध)

although / though (हालाँकि)

Use: Unexpected contrast.
Although he is poor, he is honest.
हालाँकि वह गरीब है, ईमानदार है।

even though (भले ही)

Even though it was cold, he went out.
भले ही ठंड थी, वह बाहर गया।

whereas / while (जबकि)

He is rich whereas his brother is poor.
वह अमीर है जबकि उसका भाई गरीब है।

5. PURPOSE (उद्देश्य)

so that / in order that (ताकि)

He studied hard so that he could pass.
उसने मेहनत की ताकि पास हो सके।

lest (कहीं ऐसा न हो कि)

Work hard lest you fail.
मेहनत करो कहीं ऐसा न हो कि फेल हो जाओ।

that (कि)

She said that she was tired.
उसने कहा कि वह थकी थी।

6. RESULT (परिणाम)

so…that (इतना…कि)

He was so tired that he slept.
वह इतना थका था कि सो गया।

such…that (ऐसा…कि)

It was such a hot day that we stayed home.
दिन इतना गर्म था कि हम घर रहे।

7. PLACE (स्थान)

where (जहाँ)

Go where you feel safe.
जाओ जहाँ सुरक्षित लगे।

wherever (जहाँ कहीं)

Follow me wherever I go.
मेरा पीछा करो जहाँ भी मैं जाऊँ।

whence (जहाँ से)

Return whence you came.
लौटो जहाँ से आए हो।

8. MANNER / COMPARISON (तरीका / तुलना)

as (जैसे)

Do as I say.
वैसा करो जैसा मैं कहूँ।

as if / as though (मानो)

He behaves as if he were a king.
वह ऐसे व्यवहार करता है मानो राजा हो।

than (से)

She is taller than me.
वह मुझसे लंबी है।

the way (जिस तरह)

Do it the way I taught you.
इसे करो जिस तरह मैंने सिखाया।

9. EXTENT / DEGREE (सीमा)

to the extent that (इस हद तक कि)

He was injured to the extent that he couldn’t walk.
वह इस हद तक घायल था कि चल नहीं सका।

so far as (जहाँ तक)

Help me so far as you can.
मेरी मदद करो जहाँ तक कर सको।

Meaning: in contrast / but
Hindi: हालाँकि / लेकिन

Example:
He is rich; however, he is unhappy.
वह अमीर है; हालाँकि, वह खुश नहीं है।

2. therefore

Meaning: as a result
Hindi: इसलिए

Example:
It was raining; therefore, we stayed at home.
बारिश हो रही थी; इसलिए, हम घर पर रहे।

3. moreover

Meaning: in addition
Hindi: इसके अलावा

Example:
He is honest; moreover, he is hardworking.
वह ईमानदार है; इसके अलावा, वह मेहनती भी है।

4. nevertheless

Meaning: in spite of that
Hindi: फिर भी / इसके बावजूद

Example:
He was tired; nevertheless, he continued working.
वह थका हुआ था; फिर भी, उसने काम जारी रखा।

5. otherwise

Meaning: if not / else
Hindi: नहीं तो

Example:
Study hard, otherwise you will fail.
मेहनत से पढ़ो, नहीं तो तुम फेल हो जाओगे।

6. now that

Meaning: because of a new situation
Hindi: अब जब

Example:
Now that he is here, we can start the meeting.
अब जब वह यहाँ है, हम बैठक शुरू कर सकते हैं।

7. seeing that

Meaning: because / since
Hindi: क्योंकि

Example:
Seeing that it was late, we left early.
क्योंकि देर हो चुकी थी, हम जल्दी निकल गए।

8. unless

Meaning: if not
Hindi: जब तक नहीं

Example:
You will fail unless you work hard.
तुम फेल हो जाओगे जब तक मेहनत नहीं करोगे।

9. providing / provided (that)

Meaning: on the condition that
Hindi: शर्त यह है कि

Example:
You can go out provided you finish your homework.
तुम बाहर जा सकते हो बशर्ते तुम होमवर्क पूरा करो।

10. so long as

Meaning: as long as / on condition
Hindi: जब तक

Example:
You can stay here so long as you follow the rules.
तुम यहाँ रह सकते हो जब तक नियमों का पालन करो।

11. so that

Meaning: in order that
Hindi: ताकि

Example:
He spoke loudly so that everyone could hear.
उसने ज़ोर से बोला ताकि सब सुन सकें।

12. rather than

Meaning: preference / instead of
Hindi: की बजाय

Example:
I prefer tea rather than coffee.
मैं कॉफी की बजाय चाय पसंद करता हूँ।

13. as if

Meaning: in the manner that (imaginary)
Hindi: मानो जैसे

Example:
He talks as if he knows everything.
वह ऐसे बात करता है मानो उसे सब कुछ पता हो।

14. meanwhile

Meaning: at the same time
Hindi: इस बीच

Example:
She was cooking; meanwhile, I was cleaning.
वह खाना बना रही थी; इस बीच, मैं सफाई कर रहा था।

15. consequently

Meaning: as a result
Hindi: परिणामस्वरूप

Example:
He missed the train; consequently, he arrived late.
उसकी ट्रेन छूट गई; परिणामस्वरूप, वह देर से पहुँचा।

16. furthermore

Meaning: in addition
Hindi: इसके अतिरिक्त

Example:
The plan is good; furthermore, it is affordable.
योजना अच्छी है; इसके अतिरिक्त, यह सस्ती भी है।

17. hence

Meaning: for this reason
Hindi: इसलिए / इस कारण

Example:
He was ill; hence, he could not attend school.
वह बीमार था; इसलिए, स्कूल नहीं जा सका।

18. instead

Meaning: in place of
Hindi: इसके बजाय

Example:
He didn’t call; instead, he sent a message.
उसने फोन नहीं किया; इसके बजाय, संदेश भेजा।

19. likewise

Meaning: in the same way
Hindi: उसी तरह

Example:
He helped me; likewise, I helped him.
उसने मेरी मदद की; उसी तरह, मैंने भी उसकी मदद की।
