What is Past Indefinite Tense?

The Past Indefinite Tense is used to talk about an action that was completed in the past at a definite time.

Past Indefinite Tense का प्रयोग भूतकाल में किसी निश्चित समय पर समाप्त हो चुके कार्य को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है।

Auxiliary Verb:

The auxiliary verb of Past Indefinite Tense is DID.
But DID is used only in negative and interrogative sentences, not in affirmative sentences.

Past Indefinite Tense का auxiliary verb DID होता है।
लेकिन DID का प्रयोग केवल Negative और Interrogative वाक्यों में होता है, Affirmative में नहीं।

Main Verb Form Used

English:

1. Affirmative: Verb की 2nd form (V²)

2. Negative / Interrogative: Verb की 1st form (V¹)

Hindi:

1. Affirmative वाक्य में verb की दूसरी form

2. Negative और Interrogative में verb की पहली form

Syntax / Structure

A. Affirmative Sentence - (सकारात्मक वाक्य)

Subject + Verb (2nd form) + Object

Examples:
He wrote a letter.
वह एक पत्र लिख चुका।

They watched a movie.
उन्होंने एक फिल्म देखी।

B. Negative Sentence - (नकारात्मक वाक्य)

Subject + did not + Verb (1st form) + Object

Examples:
He did not write a letter.
उसने पत्र नहीं लिखा।

She did not come yesterday.
वह कल नहीं आई।

C. Interrogative Sentence - (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य)

Wh + Did + Subject + Verb (1st form) + Object?

Examples:
Did you finish the work?
क्या तुमने काम पूरा किया?

Did she call you?
क्या उसने तुम्हें फोन किया?

D. Negative Interrogative Sentence - (नकारात्मक प्रश्नवाचक)

Wh + Did + Subject + not + Verb (1st form) + Object?
OR
Wh + Didn’t + Subject + Verb (1st form) + Object?

Examples:

Did he not attend the class?
क्या उसने कक्षा में भाग नहीं लिया?

Didn’t you meet him yesterday?
क्या तुम उससे कल नहीं मिले?

6. WH-Word Negative Interrogative Sentences

   तुमने गलती पर ध्यान क्यों नहीं दिया?

6. Who did you not meet at the party?
   तुम पार्टी में किससे नहीं मिले?

Hindi पहचान: ता था, ती थी, ते थे, या, ई, ए, आ, ई, ए If a Hindi sentence end with these then it sure that it is a Past Indefinite Tense.

ALL POSSIBLE USES OF PAST INDEFINITE TENSE 

1. Completed Actions in the Past (सबसे ज़्यादा उपयोग)

When an action finished completely in the past.

Examples:

1. I finished my homework yesterday.
   मैंने कल अपना होमवर्क पूरा किया।

2. She visited the Taj Mahal last year.
   उसने पिछले साल ताजमहल का दौरा किया।

3. They played football in the evening.
   उन्होंने शाम को फुटबॉल खेला।

4. He bought a new book yesterday.
   उसने कल एक नई किताब खरीदी।

5. We watched a movie last night.
   हमने कल रात एक फिल्म देखी।

2. Past Habits (बीती आदतें)

Actions that were done repeatedly in the past but not now.

Examples:

1. I played football every evening.
   मैं हर शाम फुटबॉल खेलता था।

2. She woke up early in the morning.
   वह सुबह जल्दी उठती थी।

3. They went to the park on Sundays.
   वे रविवार को पार्क जाते थे।

4. He read newspapers daily.
   वह रोज़ अखबार पढ़ता था।

5. We used to drink milk before sleeping.
   हम सोने से पहले दूध पीते थे।

3. Past Facts or General Truths that are no Longer True

Something that was true in the past but not now.

Examples:

1. People believed the earth was flat.
   लोग मानते थे कि पृथ्वी सपाट थी।

2. Dinosaurs lived on the earth millions of years ago.
   डायनासोर करोड़ों साल पहले पृथ्वी पर रहते थे।

3. She worked in that company, but now she has her own business.
   वह उस कंपनी में काम करती थी, लेकिन अब उसका अपना व्यवसाय है।

4. I studied in that school when I was a child.
   मैं बचपन में उस स्कूल में पढ़ता था।

5. He spoke French fluently in his youth, but now he forgot most of it.
   वह अपनी जवानी में फ्रेंच धाराप्रवाह बोलता था, लेकिन अब उसने उसका अधिकांश भाग भूल गया है।

4. Series of Completed Actions (Series of Events)

When multiple actions happened one after another.

Examples:

1. I woke up, brushed my teeth, and left for school.
   मैंने उठकर दांत साफ किए और स्कूल के लिए निकल गया।

2. She cooked breakfast, packed lunch, and went to work.
   उसने नाश्ता बनाया, लंच पैक किया और काम पर चली गई।

3. They watched a movie, played games, and went to bed.
   उन्होंने फिल्म देखी, खेल खेले और सोने चले गए।

4. He cleaned the room, watered the plants, and read a book.
   उसने कमरा साफ किया, पौधों को पानी दिया और एक किताब पढ़ी।

5. I opened the door, greeted my guests, and served tea.
   मैंने दरवाजा खोला, मेहमानों का स्वागत किया और चाय परोसी।

5. Time Expressions with Specific Past Time

Used with: yesterday, last year, ago, in 1990, once, previously, earlier etc.

1. I visited Delhi last year.
   मैंने पिछले साल दिल्ली का दौरा किया।

2. She completed her homework yesterday.
   उसने अपना होमवर्क कल पूरा किया।

3. They watched a movie on Monday.
   उन्होंने सोमवार को एक फिल्म देखी।

4. He met his friend two days ago.
   वह दो दिन पहले अपने दोस्त से मिला।

5. We celebrated Diwali in 2022.
   हमने 2022 में दिवाली मनाई।

Examples:

Notes: Time expressions: last year, yesterday, on Monday, two days ago, in 2022 - These are all specific past times, which is why Past Indefinite Tense is used.

6. Past Actions that Interrupted Another Action

(Though mostly used with past continuous, still the interrupting action is in past indefinite.)

Examples:

1. I was watching TV when the phone rang.
   मैं टीवी देख रहा था जब फोन बजा।

2. She was cooking when her friend arrived.
   वह खाना बना रही थी जब उसकी दोस्त आई।

3. They were playing cricket when it started to rain.
   वे क्रिकेट खेल रहे थे जब बारिश शुरू हो गई।

4. He was reading a book when the lights went out.
   वह किताब पढ़ रहा था जब लाइट चली गई।

5. We were walking in the park when a dog chased us.
   हम पार्क में चल रहे थे जब एक कुत्ते ने हमारा पीछा किया।

7. Actions Done by Historical Figures / Events

Used to talk about history.

Examples:

1. Alexander the Great conquered many countries.
   सिकंदर महान ने कई देशों पर विजय प्राप्त की।

2. Mahatma Gandhi led the Quit India Movement in 1942.
   महात्मा गांधी ने 1942 में भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन का नेतृत्व किया।

3. Isaac Newton discovered the law of gravity.
   आइज़क न्यूटन ने गुरुत्वाकर्षण का नियम खोजा।

4. The Wright brothers invented the first successful airplane.
   राइट ब्रदर्स ने पहला सफल विमान बनाया।

5. The French Revolution started in 1789.
   फ्रांसीसी क्रांति 1789 में शुरू हुई।

8. Past Conditions, Situations, or Circumstances

Used to describe past states.

Examples:

1. I went to the market yesterday.
   मैं कल बाजार गया।

2. She completed her homework last night.
   उसने अपनी होमवर्क कल रात पूरी की।

3. They visited the temple on Sunday.
   उन्होंने रविवार को मंदिर का दौरा किया।

4. He studied very hard for the exam.
   उसने परीक्षा के लिए बहुत मेहनत की।

5. We watched a movie yesterday evening.
   हमने कल शाम को एक फिल्म देखी।

9. Telling Stories or Narrating Events

Used in storytelling, biographies, novels etc.

Examples:

1. Yesterday, I visited the old temple in my village.
   कल मैं अपने गाँव के पुराने मंदिर गया।

2. She met her childhood friend at the park last Sunday.
   उसने पिछले रविवार को पार्क में अपने बचपन के दोस्त से मुलाकात की।

3. We watched a very interesting movie last night.
   हमने कल रात एक बहुत ही रोचक फिल्म देखी।

4. He won the school competition two years ago.
   उसने दो साल पहले स्कूल प्रतियोगिता जीत ली।

5. They traveled to Delhi during their summer vacation.
   उन्होंने अपनी गर्मियों की छुट्टियों में दिल्ली की यात्रा की।

10. Past Ability (जब “could” न हो)

When ability in the past is shown through action.

Examples:

1. I ran very fast when I was young.
   जब मैं छोटा था, मैं बहुत तेज दौड़ता था।

2. She lifted the heavy box easily yesterday.
   उसने कल भारी डिब्बा आसानी से उठाया।

3. They solved the puzzle in ten minutes.
   उन्होंने पहेली दस मिनट में हल की।

4. He spoke three languages when he was a student.
   वह छात्र रहते तीन भाषाएँ बोलता था।

5. We climbed the hill last weekend.

11. Past Decisions or Choices

To show decisions taken in the past.

Examples:

1. I chose to study English instead of science.
   मैंने विज्ञान की बजाय अंग्रेज़ी पढ़ने का निर्णय लिया।

2. She decided to take the train instead of the bus.
   उसने बस की बजाय ट्रेन लेने का निर्णय लिया।

3. They bought a new car last month.
   उन्होंने पिछले महीने एक नई कार खरीदी।

4. He opted to eat at home rather than a restaurant.
   उसने रेस्टोरेंट की बजाय घर पर खाने का विकल्प चुना।
