What is Past Perfect Tense?

The Past Perfect Tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another action or time in the past.

Past Perfect Tense का प्रयोग भूतकाल में किसी अन्य कार्य या समय से पहले पूर्ण हो चुके कार्य को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है।

Auxiliary Verb

The auxiliary verb of Past Perfect Tense is HAD. It is used with all subjects (I, we, you, he, she, they).

Main Verb Form Used

The 3rd form of verb (V³) is always used.

A. Affirmative Sentence

Structure:
Subject + had + Verb (3rd form) + Object

Examples:
She had written a letter.
उसने एक पत्र लिख लिया था।

They had watched the movie.
उन्होंने फिल्म देख ली थी।

B. Negative Sentence

(नकारात्मक वाक्य)

Structure:
Subject + had not + Verb (3rd form) + Object

Examples:
He had not completed the work.
उसने काम पूरा नहीं किया था।

I had not seen that place.
मैंने वह जगह नहीं देखी थी।

C. Interrogative Sentence

Structure:
Wh + Had + Subject + Verb (3rd form) + Object?

Examples:

Had you finished your homework?
क्या तुमने अपना होमवर्क पूरा कर लिया था?

Had she called you?
क्या उसने तुम्हें फोन किया था?

D. Negative Interrogative Sentence

Structure 
Wh + Had + Subject + not + Verb (3rd form) + Object?
OR
Wh + Hadn’t + Subject + Verb (3rd form) + Object?

Examples:
Had he not informed you?
क्या उसने तुम्हें सूचित नहीं किया था?

Hadn’t they reached on time?
क्या वे समय पर नहीं पहुँचे थे?

A. WH-Interrogative Sentences

1. What had you finished before the meeting started?
   बैठक शुरू होने से पहले तुमने क्या पूरा किया था?

2. Why had she left the office early?
   वह ऑफिस जल्दी क्यों छोड़ चुकी थी?

3. When had they reached the station?
   वे स्टेशन कब पहुँच चुके थे?

4. Where had he kept the documents?
   उसने दस्तावेज़ कहाँ रखे थे?

5. How had you solved that problem?
   तुमने वह समस्या कैसे हल की थी?

B. Negative Interrogative Sentences

1. Had you not completed the work on time?
   क्या तुमने समय पर काम पूरा नहीं किया था?

2. Had she not informed you earlier?
   क्या उसने तुम्हें पहले सूचित नहीं किया था?

3. Had they not reached home before night?
   क्या वे रात से पहले घर नहीं पहुँच चुके थे?

4. Had he not checked the email?
   क्या उसने ई-मेल नहीं देखा था?

5. Had we not discussed this issue before?
   क्या हमने इस मुद्दे पर पहले चर्चा नहीं की थी?

Hindi पहचान: चूका था, चुकी थी, चुके थे AND या/यी/ए/आ + था/थी/थे. If one of these come before a Hindi sentence that's mean it is a Past Perfect Tense sentence.

1. Past Perfect Tense - Affirmative Sentences:

(चूका था / चुकी थी / चुके थे)

1.     वह खाना खा चुका था।

2.     वह बाजार जा चुकी थी।

3.     बच्चे अपना काम कर चुके थे।

4.     मैं पानी पी चुका था।

5.     वे स्टेशन पहुँच चुके थे।

(या / यी / ए / आ + था/थी/थे)

6.     मैं स्कूल जा चुका था।

7.     वह किताब पढ़ चुकी थी।

8.     वे घर लौट आए थे।

9.     राम पत्र लिख चुका था।

10. लड़कियाँ खेल चुकी थीं।

2. Past Perfect Tense - Negative Sentences:

(चूका था / चुकी थी / चुके थे)

1.     वह खाना खा नहीं चूका था।

2.     वह काम कर नहीं चुकी थी।

3.     बच्चे पढ़ाई नहीं कर चुके थे।

4.     मैं फोन नहीं कर चूका था।

5.     वे घर नहीं आ चुके थे।

(या / यी / ए / आ + था/थी/थे)

6.     मैं स्कूल नहीं गया था।

7.     वह किताब नहीं पढ़ी थी।

8.     वे घर नहीं लौटे थे।

9.     राम पत्र नहीं लिखा था।

10. लड़कियाँ खेल नहीं पाई थीं।

(चूका था / चुकी थी / चुके थे)

1.     क्या वह खाना नहीं खा चूका था?

2.     क्या वह काम नहीं कर चुकी थी?

4.     क्या मैं फोन नहीं कर चूका था?

5.     क्या वे घर नहीं आ चुके थे?

USES OF PAST PERFECT TENSE

1. To show an action completed before another past action

Past Simple - later action

1. I had finished my homework before my father came home.
   मेरे पिता के घर आने से पहले मैं अपना होमवर्क पूरा कर चुका था।

2. She had left the office before the meeting started.
   मीटिंग शुरू होने से पहले वह ऑफिस छोड़ चुकी थी।

3. They had eaten dinner before the guests arrived.
   मेहमानों के आने से पहले वे खाना खा चुके थे।

4. He had locked the door before he went to sleep.
   सोने जाने से पहले उसने दरवाज़ा बंद कर लिया था।

5. We had reached the station before the train departed.
   ट्रेन के रवाना होने से पहले हम स्टेशन पहुँच चुके थे।

2. To show cause and effect in the past
(भूतकाल में कारण और परिणाम दिखाने के लिए)

1. I was tired because I had worked all day.
   मैं थका हुआ था क्योंकि मैंने पूरे दिन काम किया था।

2. She missed the bus because she had woken up late.
   वह बस चूक गई क्योंकि वह देर से जागी थी।

3. They failed the test because they had not studied well.
   वे परीक्षा में असफल हो गए क्योंकि उन्होंने अच्छी तरह पढ़ाई नहीं की थी।

4. He was upset because his team had lost the match.
   वह परेशान था क्योंकि उसकी टीम मैच हार गई थी।

5. We were happy because we had completed our work on time.
   हम खुश थे क्योंकि हमने अपना काम समय पर पूरा कर लिया था।

3. To show an action completed before a specific past time
(भूतकाल के किसी निश्चित समय से पहले पूरा हुआ कार्य)

1. I had finished my homework before 8 p.m.
   मैंने रात 8 बजे से पहले अपना होमवर्क पूरा कर लिया था।

2. She had left the office before the meeting started.
   मीटिंग शुरू होने से पहले वह ऑफिस छोड़ चुकी थी।

3. They had reached the station before the train arrived.
   ट्रेन आने से पहले वे स्टेशन पहुँच चुके थे।

4. He had cooked dinner before his guests came.
   मेहमानों के आने से पहले वह खाना बना चुका था।

5. We had completed the project before the deadline ended.
   समय-सीमा समाप्त होने से पहले हमने प्रोजेक्ट पूरा कर लिया था।

4. To describe past experiences before another past moment
(भूतकाल की पहले की अनुभव)

1. I had visited Delhi before I moved to Jaipur.
   मैं जयपुर जाने से पहले दिल्ली जा चुका था।

2. She had learned English before she started her job.
   उसने अपनी नौकरी शुरू करने से पहले अंग्रेज़ी सीख ली थी।

3. They had eaten dinner before the guests arrived.
   मेहमानों के आने से पहले वे रात का खाना खा चुके थे।

4. He had watched that movie before he read the story.
   कहानी पढ़ने से पहले वह वह फ़िल्म देख चुका था।

5. We had completed the project before the deadline passed.
   समय-सीमा समाप्त होने से पहले हमने परियोजना पूरी कर ली थी।

5. To show completion before a past deadline
(भूतकाल की समय-सीमा से पहले)

1. She had finished the project before the deadline.
   उसने समय-सीमा से पहले परियोजना पूरी कर ली थी।

2. They had submitted the form before the last date.
   उन्होंने अंतिम तिथि से पहले फॉर्म जमा कर दिया था।

3. I had completed the syllabus before the exam started.
   मैंने परीक्षा शुरू होने से पहले पाठ्यक्रम पूरा कर लिया था।

4. He had paid the fees before the office closed.
   उसने कार्यालय बंद होने से पहले फीस जमा कर दी थी।

5. We had booked the tickets before the deadline expired.
   हमने समय-सीमा समाप्त होने से पहले टिकट बुक कर लिए थे।
