What is Past Perfect Tense?

The Past Perfect Tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another action in the past.

E. g. - It shows “earlier past”.

Past Perfect Tense का प्रयोग उस काम के लिए किया जाता है जो भूतकाल में किसी दूसरे काम से पहले पूरा हो चुका था।

E. g. - यह पहले घट चुकी क्रिया को दर्शाता है।

Hindi पहचान: चूका था, चुकी थी, चुके थे AND या/यी/ए/आ + था/थी/थे. If one of these come before a Hindi sentence that's mean it is a Past Perfect Tense sentence.

1. Past Perfect Tense - Affirmative Sentences:

(चूका था / चुकी थी / चुके थे)

1.     वह खाना खा चुका था।

2.     वह बाजार जा चुकी थी।

3.     बच्चे अपना काम कर चुके थे।

4.     मैं पानी पी चुका था।

5.     वे स्टेशन पहुँच चुके थे।

6.     मैं स्कूल जा चुका था।

7.     वह किताब पढ़ चुकी थी।

8.     वे घर लौट आए थे।

Structure:

Subject + had + not + V3 + Object

Examples:

I had not seen him before.
मैंने उसे पहले नहीं देखा था।

उसने काम पूरा नहीं किया था।

C. Interrogative Sentence (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य)

Structure:

Wh + had + Subject + V3 + Object ?

Examples:

Had you finished the task?
क्या तुमने काम पूरा कर लिया था?

Had she left the office?
क्या वह ऑफिस छोड़ चुकी थी?

D. Negative Interrogative Sentence (नकारात्मक प्रश्नवाचक)

Structure:

Wh + Had + Subject + not + V3 + Object ?

Examples:

Had you not completed the homework?
क्या तुमने होमवर्क पूरा नहीं किया था?

Had he not informed you?
क्या उसने तुम्हें सूचना नहीं दी थी?

E. Wh-Word Sentences – Past Perfect Tense

Wh-word + had + subject + past participle (V³)?

Examples:

English: What had he done before sunset?
Hindi: सूर्यास्त से पहले उसने क्या किया था?

English: When had she completed her work?
Hindi: उसने अपना काम कब पूरा किया था?

Use of Past Perfect with Two Actions (दो कार्यों वाले वाक्य)

जब दो काम भूतकाल में हों, तो
👉पहले हुआ काम – Past Perfect
👉 बाद में हुआ काम – Simple Past

1. मैं किताब पढ़ चुका था। I had read a book.
   यह affirmative sentence है।
   यहाँ subject I है, इसलिए helping verb had का प्रयोग किया गया है। Past perfect tense में main verb की third form (V3: read) लगती है क्योंकि काम पहले ही पूरा हो चुका था।

5. वह परीक्षा पास कर चुका था। He had passed the exam.
   यह affirmative sentence है।
   यहाँ subject he है, इसलिए helping verb had का प्रयोग किया गया है। Verb की third form (passed) Past perfect tense के लिए लगती है।

6. वह गाना गा चुकी थी। She had sung the song.
   यह affirmative sentence है।
   यहाँ subject she है, इसलिए helping verb had का प्रयोग किया गया है। Main verb की third form (sung) Past perfect tense में लगी है।

7. यह काम पूरा हो चुका था। It had been done.
   यह affirmative sentence है।
   यहाँ subject it है, इसलिए helping verb had का प्रयोग किया गया है। Verb की third form (been done) Past perfect tense में लगती है।

8. अमित ने रिपोर्ट लिख ली थी। Amit had written the report.
   यह affirmative sentence है।

   He had just completed the task.
   उसने उस काम को अभी-अभी पूरा किया था।

5. never (before) – कभी नहीं (पहले)
   I had never seen such a beautiful place before.
   मैंने पहले कभी ऐसा खूबसूरत स्थान नहीं देखा था।

6. ever (before) – कभी (पहले)
   Had you ever visited this city before?
   क्या तुमने इस शहर में पहले कभी यात्रा की थी?

7. previously – पहले / पूर्व में
   She had previously worked in a bank.
   उसने पहले / पूर्व में बैंक में काम किया था।

8. earlier – पहले
   He had arrived earlier than expected.
   वह उम्मीद से पहले पहुंच गया था।

9. by the time – जब तक
   By the time I reached, the train had left.
   जब तक मैं पहुंचा, ट्रेन छूट चुकी थी।

10. until then – तब तक
    I had never met him until then.
    मैं उससे तब तक कभी नहीं मिला था।

11. till then – तब तक
    We had been waiting till then.
